ALTAVISTA PETROGLYPHS

 Step back in time

Hike accompanied by birds and butterflies alongside a riverbed trail, 30 minutes into the lush tropical jungle, exploring and marveling at over 70 petroglyphs (stone carvings) at a sacred and best-kept secret archaeological site.

This fascinating hidden gem is located 45 minutes north of San Pancho, near the beach town of Chacala. It was discovered over 500 years ago, the Tecoxquines, an ancient Aztecan tribe, are believed to have created the beautiful and compelling carvings over 2000 years ago to communicate with their gods.
The Huichol continue to carry out ceremonies to this day. There is a stunning waterfall and lots of swimming holes, and information in English.
